2008 Clinician Seminar

Defeat Autism Now! is delighted to team up with Autism One to provide a one day Clinician Seminar on Thursday, May 22, prior to the Autism One conference. Clinicians attending the Clinician Seminar will be provided two five-day complimentary passes (Wednesday, May 21 - Sunday, May 25) to Autism One.

The purpose of the clinician seminar is to teach practitioners the nuts and bolts of caring for the medical problems of children with autism. We will review the relevant science and provide citations from the medical literature. The bulk of the day will be spent analyzing case studies and laboratory evaluations so that attendees will gain understanding of how to synthesize information from the history, physical exam, lab data with clinical intuition to develop rational treatment strategies.

Topics will include: how to identify and correct intestinal inflammation, metabolic abnormalities, immune problems and detoxification impairment (which are all physical disorders often associated with autism). We will emphasize the role of diet and nutrition, which includes the use of supplements. We will identify local resources for developing treatment plans that are based on the unique needs of each child.

Our faculty will review common problems in four areas: intestinal inflammation, metabolic abnormalities, immune dysregulation and detoxification impairment. The basic science will be explained by utilizing case histories so that parents will understand how impairments in the cycles manifest clinically. We will emphasize the importance of a careful history and physical exam to identify medical problems which may be amenable to treatment. We will discuss the rational use of laboratory testing based on the unique presentation of each patient. Choosing nutritional supplements can be confusing and complex. We will review the rationale for choosing certain supplements, both from a basic perspective as well as how to choose what for specific symptoms.

Our faculty includes:

Dr. Elizabeth Mumper, who is Medical Director of the Autism Research Institute and a general pediatrician who treats children with autism spectrum disorders and attention deficits and conducts clinical research in Virginia. In September she opened The RIMLAND Center in order to have a facility where clinicians could come to learn about many aspects of medical care and therapies for children with autism.

Dr. Nancy O’Hara, who is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and board certified in both general pediatrics and developmental pediatrics. She dedicates her practice to the integrative care of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and serves on the Defeat Autism Now! Executive Council.

Dr. Anju Usman, who is a family physician and follows the principals of Defeat Autism Now! in her clinical practice in the Chicago area. She has special expertise in the nuances of biochemical aberrations in children with autism spectrum disorders and teaches advanced strategies for tough cases.

Defeat Autism Now! is dedicated to the exploration, evaluation and dissemination of scientifically documented biomedical interventions for individuals within the autism spectrum through the collaborative efforts of clinicians, researchers and parents.
